Patna: Police in West Champaran district arrested a man two days after he sent a text message to a Patna doctor demanding Rs. 1 crore in extortion money or be prepared to face dire consequences.

Ramakant Yadav was arrested from Jogpatti in Bettiah on Thursday after police traced his whereabouts using the cell number from which he had made the call to Dr. Hemant Verma, a Kankarbagh-based pediatrician in Patna, asking him to fork out Rs. 1 crore or 'something bad would happen to him'.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj said that Yadav, a convicted felon who had come out of the prison barely a month ago on bail, had dreamed up the entire extortion plan with the intention to implicate on Avlesh Yadav by purchasing the phone SIM card on his name.

Police recovered the cell phone used in the commission of crime from his possession.

Verma had lodged a case with the Kankarbagh police after he received the threatening text message last Tuesday.
