Patna: A day after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal – U leaders nominated their candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its own candidates nominating former state BJP President Gopal Narayan Singh, Arjun Sahni, and Vinod Narayan Jha who filed their papers on Tuesday in the presence of several NDA leaders.
With today being the last day to file the nomination papers, Singh, Sahni, and Jha completed the filing formalities before Bihar Assembly Secretary/Returning Officer Ram Shreshta Rai.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, whose name had been making rounds among those chosen to be nominated, was present on the occasion along with BJP state President Mangal Pandey, Nand Kishore Yadav, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) President Jitan Ram Manjhi, Prem Kumar, Ram Kripal Yadav, Sanjay Mayukh and others.
Elections are being held to fill five Rajya Sabha seats and seven Bihar Legislative Council seats.
The BJP was, however, criticized by the Janata Dal – U leaders for nominating Gopal Narayan Singh for Rajya Sabha membership.
Speaking at a press conference, JD-U spokesperson Sanjay Singh and Ajay Alok expressed their surprise for passing Sushil Kumar Modi over Singh.
"There are 28 criminal cases pending against Gopal Narayan Singh involving attempted murder, robbery, forgery, arms acts, and violation in mining acts. This exposes Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had talked about tough measures against those facing criminal cases. Singh is considered to be the leader of the mining mafia and the PM should explain why he thought he would make a good Rajya Sabha member," the JD-U leader said.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
