Patna: Police in Patna on Wednesday resorted to lathi charge on Dalit students who had been protesting against the Nitish government for slashing scholarship for students from Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities.
As reported, hundreds of students from various parts of Bihar took out a rally against the state government for cutting down amount of scholarship for dalit students. When the rally arrived at the JP Roundabout near Gandhi Maidan, the police tried to stop them from marching forward towards the state Assembly.
This enraged the students who, ignoring warnings of a certain flair-up, began pelting rocks and stones at the cops sending one inspector and six constables to the hospital. Realizing the situation was getting out of hand, police then jumped into action and began swinging their batons on them injuring at least six students who were taken to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for treatment.
Officials said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in order to compensate for the loss of revenue caused due to introduction of prohibition in Bihar, had ordered cut in the scholarship for post-matriculation dalit students from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 15,000.
The incident was condemned by the opposition leaders in the state Assembly who demanded answer from the Chief Minister for arbitrarily cutting the scholarship for dalit students.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
