Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Sunday put the blame for Makar Sankranti boat tragedy squarely on the shoulder of the Nitish administration saying it was guilty of gross negligence for failing to make available adequate number of boats for more than a lakh people who had gathered in the Patna diara area to take part in a state-sponsored kite flying festival.
"More than two dozen people perished in yesterday's tragedy that could have been easily avoided had the Nitish administration made proper arrangement to ferry the fun-seekers to and from the diara area. However, instead of owning up to its negligence, the Chief Minister is trying to shift the blame on a private amusement country that was running a ferry service to provide a service to the visitors who were clearly ignored by the administration," the former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar said adding the so-called amusement park was not even open when the kite festival was organized in the diara area.
"It's silly to blame the amusement park company that is yet to begin operating in the area," he said.
Accusing the Chief Minister of morphing into a publicity monger, Modi said that Nitish Kumar was going around all over the state patting his own back for introducing prohibition in Bihar while the people of the state were left to fend for themselves in the lack of any cohesive development policy.
"No one but the Chief Minister is responsible for the boat tragedy on Makar Sankranti. If he is arrogant enough to take full credit for the success of events like Prakash Utsav then he should also take full responsibility of a tragedy of this magnitude that took under his watch. He has a habit of taking credits for all the good things in Bihar but when a tragedy strikes, he starts looking for excuses while holding other people responsible," the BJP leader said adding Kumar, in the wake of the boat disaster, should postpone or cancel his proposed human chain on January 21 to celebrate imposition of prohibition in the state.
Modi, who visited Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday to meet with the survivors, also accused the Chief Minister of ignoring the event at the diara area by shifting his focus on Lalu-Rabri household where Nitish Kumar was invited to have 'dahi-chura' on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
