Patna: In what was supposed to be a day filled with fun and frolics, seven children and an adult drowned in the Ganges as they got off their boat a little too early to walk to a piece of dry land where they were to take part in a family picnic.

As reported, the family members from Fatuha were going on a picnic on an 'island' in the Ganges that had emerged in the last few weeks due to receding level of water in the river under Raghopur police station in Hajipur district. When the boat approached the island, some members of the family jumped into the river thinking they were on the shallow ground.

Unfortunately, the boat was still in the deep part of the river and one after another, seven children were swallowed by the river. A woman who also jumped into the water to save the children also drowned and died.

Three other persons were somehow able to swim out of the water and back on to the boat.

Victims were identified as Ranju Devi, wife of Shankar Yadav, and Chhoti Kumari, the daughter of Shankar Yadav; Gautam Kumar, Gaurav Kumar (both sons of Bihari Yadav), Kajli Kumari, daughter of Rambali Yadav; Arti Kumari, daughter of Arun Kumar; and Sahil Kumar, son of Bhola Yadav, all ranging between the age of 10 and 14.

Divers were able to fish out seven bodies while one body was yet to be found, police said.

District Magistrate Sanjay Agrawal announced a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for each of the victims to the family members.
