Patna: Public Sector Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) grandmaster M R Lalithbabu emerged the winner in the 55th Khadi India National Premier Chess tournament hosted by All Bihar Chess Association at Patna's Lemon Tree Hotel on Friday after he managed a draw against Swapnil S Ghorpade in the 13th and final round of the competition for a cumulative point of nine.

Tamil Nadu's Arvind Chidambaram, despite losing to Devashish Das in the final round, emerged as the second-place winner (runners up) thanks to his 8.5 points that he accumulated in the previous rounds.

From the very beginning, the match between Lalithbabu and Ghorpade appeared to be headed for a draw and in the 15th move, the former called for a draw to walk away with a total point of nine – enough to capture the title.

In the other match, Chidambaram, playing with Devashish, lost his match but grab the runners-up title for a total point of 8.5.

The first-place winner walked away with Rs. 2.5 lakh in cash while the second-place winner had to settle with Rs. 1.4 lakh.

Other winners of the prize money include third-place winner Karthikeyan Murali with 7.5 point (Rs. 1 lakh), Devashish Das, also with 7.5 point (Rs. 80,000); S L Narayanan (Rs. 70,000), S Nitin (Rs. 60,000), Ardhyadeep Das (Rs. 55,000), Abhijeet Kunte (Rs. 50,000), R R Lakshman (Rs. 45,000); Deepan Chakravarty (Rs. 40,000), Swapnil Ghorpade (Rs. 35,000); P Shyam Nikhil (Rs. 30,000), S J Shetty (Rs. 25,000), and Himanshu Sharma (Rs. 20,000)

Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi of Patna High Court handed out the prizes to the winners in the presence of chief guest Bharat Singh Chauhan, Honorary Secretary, All India Chess Federation, and many others.
