Patna: Police in Patna on Sunday arrested three men and charged them with running illegal internet-based telephone exchanges using private servers to aid and abet in criminal activities including illegal money transfers, extortion, and financing terroristic activities.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided houses in Lalji Tola and Lohanipur and seized several servers, routers, more than 200 SIM cards, ATM and PAN cards, several bank books and other paraphernalia to facilitate illegal Voice Over IP (VOIP) phone calls and surreptitious money transfer without being detected by the authorities.

Arrested men were identified as Nalin Sinha of Hajipur, and Rohit Kumar and Sushil Kumar Chaurasia of Gopalganj.

Patna Zonal IG Nayyar Hasnain Khan said that international calls were routed through proxy servers to the sim cards to avoid detection. The calls were then directed to numbers across the country, he said.
