Patna: Congress leaders in Patna on Saturday celebrated the 71st birthday of Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi by cutting a cake for her and feeding the cake to her picture – a practice, though silly, now quite common among leaders of all parties.

Celebrating her birthday at the Sadaqat Ashram, the party headquarters in Patna, leaders shared cakes and sweets among each other calling Gandhi a true leader who 'led the party to outstanding victories in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections.'

Party state President Kaukab Qadri, congratulating Gandhi on her birthday, thanked her for her leadership for the past 19 years saying despite having been elected its leader twice by the Congress Parliamentary Party, she chose to make Dr. Manmohan Singh, a member of a minority community, the Prime Minister of India.

On the occasion, members of the Youth Congress planted a tree in honor of the Congress leader.

As reported, Mrs. Gandhi is all set to abdicate her position in favor of her son Rahul Gandhi who has already been determined the next President of the Congress Party and is also seen as the party's nominee for the Prime Minister's post in the next Parliamentary polls.
