Jamshedhpur, Kolkata Sprinters Win 21 km Half-Marathon

Patna: For nearly 4,000 people coming from all walks of life and from a number of states, it was a day of reckoning for many as the first ever half-marathon race took off with former Olympian sprinter Milkha Singh and Patna Traffic SP P K Das flagged off the race in Patna on Sunday morning.

Sponsored by Elamai Enterprises and Proton Sports, runners of all ages participated in three categories including the half-marathon that covered a distance of 21.1 kilometer, and 10- kilometer and four-kilometer categories.

A total of 350 people participated in the half marathon while 450 men and women took part in the 10-kilometer run. About 3,200 people, including many children, took part in the 4-kilonter run.

The race began at 6:00 am and ended around 9:30 am.

Arjun Tudu of Jamshedpur took the first place in the men's half-marathon by covering the 21.1 kilometer in 1hr 7m and 2 sec while Pratima of Kolkata won the first place by finishing the race in 1 hr 27 m and 34s. Second place in men's section went to Pramod Kumar of Varanasi and Suman Bharti of Madhepura, Bihar, occupied the second place in the women's section of the competition.

With a total purse of Rs. 10 lakh, the winners in the half-marathon walked away with Rs. 40,000 each.
