Patna: Officials at Patna Junction on Saturday arrested a man traveling from Vibhuti Express and seized Swiss-made gold bars with a market value of Rs. 1.6 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, officials representing the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched the air-conditioned coach of the train and found five gold bars weighing over five kilograms in possession of one Gyan Chand Verma, age 48.
The gold bars were brought into India from Bangladesh and were taken to Varanasi, police said adding Verma was a jeweler with a shop in Varanasi.
Police said Verma had been in the DRI scanner for quite some time as police had information about him being a smuggler with connection in Nepal and Bangladesh.
"Verma boarded the train in Howrah and was headed to Varanasi. Police found him in coach B3 of the Vibhuti Express. Gold bars were found in a belt that he was wearing on his waist," police said.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
