Patna: An early morning fire in the New Market just outside Patna Junction destroyed a clothing and a shoe warehouse causing loss of several lakh rupees. No one, however, was said to be hurt in the incident.
As reported, people noticed smoke coming out of one of the warehouses on Monday morning. However, they thought that it was coming out of one of the restaurants in the market, and there are several of them in there.
Only when the smoke became dark and start to bellow out of the shops that people became alarmed and rushed to see where it was coming from. Initially they tried to douse the fire themselves but when it started to spread in other shops in the market, someone called the fire station.
Soon four fire tenders arrived at the market but had to struggle to get in the narrow lanes that makes up the market. Somehow, they managed to find their way to the burning warehouses – one storing cheap, plastic shoes while the other storing clothing items - after which it took them nearly an hour and a half to bring the situation under control.
The owners of the two shops Ajay Kumar and Dharmnath Kumar also arrived at the market only to find their business burnt to ashes.
Initial estimate put the loss at about Rs. 12 lakh.
People in the neighborhood said most of the shops in the market are actually used as storage facilities by street vendors doing their business around Patna Junction, R-Block, Frazer Road, Harding Road and other close by areas.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
