Patna: Student leaders of five different parties in Patna on Tuesday in a joint appearance issued a deadline to Patna University saying if the university did not announce date for the next election of the students' union within two days, they will be forced to launch a massive agitation against the university.
"The university has been dilly-dallying on holding elections in spite of a memo from the Governor's office that instructed the university to hold elections before February 28. There is just no more excuse for the university officials but if the date is not announced within next two days, we will have no option left but to go on a massive agitation," said one of the youth leaders.
The students also expressed their concerns about impending exams saying the Vice Chancellor's lackadaisical approach towards union election led to this situation where students could not canvass or participate in the election process due to their study requirements.
"Exams and election cannot be held at the same time and we hope the administration will take this into account before announcing dates for the election.," Sushil Kumar, an All India Students' Federation (AISF) member, said.
The students also demanded a presidential debate before the elections among all candidates.
Besides AISF, other party representatives present on the occasion included Mokhtar of All India Students' Association (AISA), Nikolai Sharma and Natasha Sharma of All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO), Azad Chand of Jan Adhikar Party (JAP), and Nitesh Kumar of National Students Union of India (NSUI).
Meanwhile, members of the student wing of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) torched an effigy of Patna University Vice Chancellor Ras Bihari Singh demanding holding of union election without further delay.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
