Muzaffarpur: At least nine children were reported dead and many injured when an out of control Bolero mowed them down on National Highway 77 under Minapur police station in Muzaffarpur district when they were crossing the road after getting out of their school on Saturday afternoon.

All the children were students of Dharampur Madhya Vidyalaya.

While the details of the tragedy remain sketchy, eyewitnesses said the driver of the SUV tried to avoid hitting an old woman trying to cross the road but, in the process, over-corrected his move and slammed into a group of children who were trying to cross the road at the fateful moment.

The vehicle then slammed into a tree after which the driver was able to abandon the vehicle and escape to avoid the mob wrath.

Nine children died on the spot while the injured were transported to a hospital in Muzaffarpur where many were said to be in critical condition.

Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Kumar said six children remained in critical condition at the Sri Krishna Memorial College and Hospital (SKMCH) and the number of casualty was likely to go up.

Authorities are trying to identify the driver of the vehicle, Kumar said.
