Araria: Election officials in Araria district on Saturday lodged an FIR against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state President Nityanand Rai for violating model electoral code of conduct when, during a recent stump speech, he said that if the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Sarfaraz Alam was allowed to win in the Parliament poll, Araria would turn into a hotbed of ISI terrorist activities.

Rai's comment made headlines across the nation as RJD, backed by its ally Congress, cried foul demanding immediate arrest of the BJP leader for trying to fan communal unrest in the area that remains a stronghold of Muslim voters.

The incendiary comment was made on March 9 when Rai was campaigning with party candidate Pradeep Kumar at Narpatganj.

The FIR was registered by nodal officer Nishant Kumar after RJD leaders accused Rai of fomenting communal disharmony to polarize Hindu votes in Araria just days before the election on Sunday.

"This is a clear attempt to polarize the voters on religious lines. Rai should explain if Araria is a hub of terrorist activities by ISI agents and if so, what is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both leaders of the NDA, are doing about it and why did they allow the ISI agents to flourish in Bihar," RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejaswi Yadav said.
