Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Bihar on Thursday took part in the nationwide day-long fast in a sign of protest against the Congress-led boycott of the Budget Session in the Parliament that has the NDA leaders fuming for the past few weeks.

Sitting at the dharna at Gardanibagh in Patna, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Bihar Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, former Union Health Minister Dr. C. P. Thakur, and party legislator Nitin Navin, among many others, observed the fast in a tit-for-tat for the recent Congress fast in which its leaders were caught filling their stomachs with 'chhole-bhature' prior to sitting on the so-called fast.

Talking to reporters, Prasad said that while the entire fast by Congress was a farce engineered by party President Rahul Gandhi, today's fast by the BJP, in contrast, was to protest over the shameful acts of the Congress and its allies who have denied the government the opportunity to talk about various issues being faced by the nation for nearly a month now.

Rubbishing allegations of the NDA trying to do away with reservation, the Union Minister said there was no truth to it and instead, the Central government was doing everything to address the complaints of the Dalits in the aftermath of a recent Supreme Court decision that introduced anticipatory bail in discrimination case while also making it mandatory for the police officers to first check the legitimacy of the complaint before filing an FIR or arresting the accused.

Meanwhile, other BJP leaders from Bihar spread across the state, mostly in their own constituencies, with party state President Nityanand Rai sitting on the fast in Ujiyarpur, Ashwini Kumar Choubey in Buxar, Giriraj Singh in Nawada, R K Singh in Ara, Radha Mohan Singh in Motihari, and Ram Kripal Yadav in Digha.

Continuing to slam the Congress, Prasad said that besides giving lip service to the Dalits for over 50 years, the nation's Grand Old Party had intentionally kept a large portion of the population poor and illiterate so it could continue to exploit them as their vote bank.

"The truth is, Congress has kept them backward on purpose for decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, from day one had been working hard to improve the situation of Dalits and backwards. He has introduced a number of schemes to empower them while also making the largest number of loans to them so they could improve their condition. Congress is not able to stomach this and that is why it has decided to paralyze the Parliament," he said.
