Patna: Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, at a press conference in Patna on Sunday once again urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to build pressure on the Narendra Modi-led Union government to accord special status to Bihar – an issue that has remained hot for nearly a decade now serving as one of the main talking points during each state and national election.

"Nitish Kumar should issue an ultimatum to the Modi government of one to two months to accord special economic status to Bihar but if he fails to do so, he should resign from his post because this was one of his original promises to the people of Bihar," Manjhi, who briefly became the Chief Minister between May 20, 2014 and February 20, 2015, said.

Manjhi, who earlier ditched the NDA to form a quick alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), said that without special status category, Bihar could not expect to make much progress on economic front and therefore, it was the duty of Nitish Kumar to put pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi so Bihar gets what its people rightly deserved.

The HAM leader, who has been accused of using his Dalit status to remain relevant in Bihar politics while at the same time doing everything in his might to promote the political career of his son, recently declared former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav as his new leader saying he would support him whole-heartedly in his bid to become the next Chief Minister of Bihar.
