Patna: Bihar Education Minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma, following the dramatic resignation of Social Welfare minister Manju Verma in the aftermath of Muzaffarpur shelter sexual abuse case, was entrusted with additional charge of the Social Welfare Department by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday.

As reported, Manju Verma (JD-U) was forced to resign from his Cabinet post after telephone records showed her husband Chandeshwar Verma was in constant touch with Brajesh Thakur, the director of the girls' shelter home in Muzaffarpur, also the key accused in the sexual abuse case of nearly three dozen girls, some as young as seven-year-old.

Though Verma denied the accusation saying she was the victim of a witch-hunt by her opponents, she said she was resigning on moral grounds and justice would be served in her favor as she had full faith in the judiciary.

"I am aware of the condition under which the Chief Minister has entrusted me with additional responsibility to manage the Social Welfare department and I am very thankful to him for his trust and confidence in me. I pledge to do fulfill my duties with complete honesty and transparency so as not to disappoint anyone," Verma said.
