Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday congratulated party leader and Member of Parliament Harivansh Narayan Singh for being elected the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Singh, a Janata Dal – U MP, was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA candidate.
He secured a total of 125 votes against the opposition candidate and Congress MP B K Hariprasad who secured 105 votes.
The post had been lying vacant since the retirement of P J Kurien on July 1.
Calling Singh an intellectual with 'immense power in his pen', Kumar congratulated the JD-U leader and showered praise on his contributions in the field of journalism.
Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi also congratulated Singh his election had made both Bihar and Jharkhand very proud.
Born on June 30, 1956 in Sitabdiara in Rohtas district in Bihar that also happens to be the birth place of Loknayak Jaya Prakash Narayan, Singh began his career in journalism in 1977. For a brief period between 1981 and 1984, he worked at the Bank of India only to resign later and join Hindi weekly 'Ravivar' where he worked as Assistant Editor until 1989. He also worked for weekly Hindi magazine 'Dharmyug' while being based in Mumbai. His foray in the political world came as a political consultant when Chandrashekhar became the Prime Minister of India.
Between 1989 and 2014, Singh served as the Editor-in-Chief of Prabhat Khabar newspaper in Ranchi.
