Durga Puja Ends Peacefully with Lanka Dahan and Fireworks

Patna: The 10-day Durga Puja came to a peaceful end with Dussehra on Friday evening with the burning of the effigy of demon king Ravan, Kumbhakaran, and Meghnad at the Gandhi Maidan in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a host of other VIPs.

Over two lakh people had gathered at the city's historical Gandhi Maidan to watch the 'Lanka Dahan' and the symbolic killing of Ravan amidst extremely tight security arrangement by the district administration.

The event began after the customary lighting of lamp by the Chief Minister followed by the 'torching of Lanka' and 'slaying of the Lanka King' ultimately leading to a spectacular firework that filled the sky with bright lights and smoke.

Later in the evening, all Patna roads led to various Ganga ghats were Puja organizers immersed the idol of Goddess Durga in the river amidst religious songs and hymns.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj congratulated the city police for a job well done. "The puja was conducted peacefully and no untoward incident took place," he said.

Others present on the occasion included Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Chowdhary, Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey, and Congress state President Madan Mohan Jha.
