Cop Gunned Down by Criminals in Patna

Patna: Criminals in Patna on Monday shot and killed a police jawan in an encounter that took place under Kankarbagh police station and managed to escape despite the large presence of many law enforcement officials at the crime scene.

The incident occurred late evening as the police, acting on a tip-off, raided an area close to the Central School on a bridge to catch members of the notorious Ujjwal gang who were reported to have gathered there to plan their next act of crime.

As the police surrounded the gangsters, constable Mukesh Singh caught hold of two of the criminals. However, at that time other criminals opened fire at the cops and as the cops retaliated by firing back at them, two bullets hit Mukesh, one in his stomach and the other in his ear, killing him on the spot.

Despite several rounds of fire by the police in an encounter lasting nearly half an hour, the criminals managed to escape in the cover of the darkness after managing to free their two associates earlier captured by the police.

The deceased constable was a native of Ara district.

Senior police officials including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj, DIG Central Range Rajesh Kumar, Additional SP Sushant Kumar had arrived at the crime scene to gauge the situation.
