Patna: In what was supposed to be a time of celebration and joy as the family members prepared for the big event on Monday, Snigdha, the younger daughter of retired IG Umashankar Sudhanshu, ended her life by jumping from the 13th floor of a building just a day before her wedding.

Snigdha, a doctor currently doing her post grad from a medical college in Kolkata, jumped from the roof of Udaygiri Apartments located on Buddha Marg near Patna Museum under Kotwali police station at around 8:00 Sunday morning. Her wedding to Mahendra Kumar, a 2011-batch IAS officer currently serving as the District Magistrate (DM) of Kishanganj, was to be solemnized on Monday.

As reported, the would-be bride came from her home in Patel Nagar to the Udaygiri Apartments on her chauffeur-driven car. She told the driver that she would be back soon. After that, she took the stairs to the roof of the building from where she leaped to her death.

Police has not found any suicide note.

Snigdha and Mahendra Kumar were engaged for nearly a year. On Saturday, the family of both bride and the bridegroom had held the 'tilak' ceremony in the presence of many prominent bureaucrats of Bihar.

Sudhanshu, who retired as Darbhanga IG in 2017, has an elder daughter who is also married to an IAS officer.

Snigdha's apparent suicide has come as a big shock for the family as hundreds of guests had already arrived from various parts of the country to take part in the wedding and all arrangements had already been made before tomorrow's scheduled wedding.

Top police officials including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj had arrived at the scene and were seen interviewing possible eyewitnesses to get a picture that led to today's sad turn in the event.

"Based on the current evidence, it does appear to be a case of suicide but police will investigate it from all angles," the SSP said.

The body of Snigdha was sent to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for autopsy.
