Bihar Beats Manipur in Ranji Match; Spinner Breaks 44-year Old Record

Patna: Bihar cricket team, continuing to maintain its winning spree in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match, defeated Manipur by three wickets at Patna's Moinul Haque Stadium on Wednesday.

Continuing play from Tuesday when Manipur has already lost seven of its wickets, the visiting team lost its remaining three wickets at the team total of 238 runs leaving Bihar to chase 140 runs to win the match.

Not playing like it did in the first inning, Bihar team, however, managed to score the needed runs for the loss of seven wickets thus winning the match by three wickets.

Bihar captain Ashutosh Aman, who has emerged as one of the deadliest bowlers in the Ranji league by breaking the record previously held by legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, once again wreaked havoc in the second inning taking seven of the ten wickets. For the match, Aman grabbed an impressive 11 wickets while Samar Qadri walked away with a total of eight wickets of his own.

Earlier, Bihar, after winning the toss, had invited Manipur to bat first. The gamble paid off beautifully when the host limited the visiting team at 156 runs. Bihar then scored 257 runs in the first inning. Manipur, while playing better in the second inning, still was all out for 238 runs leaving Bihar to chase 140 runs and despite a bit shaky display of batting by the home team, it was able to reach the goal with three wickets still in hand.

With his 11 wickets in this match and a total of 68 wickets in the ongoing Ranji session, lefty Aman broke the 44-year old record held be all-time great Bishan Singh Bedi who had set the record by taking 64 wickets in a single Ranji season back in 1974-75.
