Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, at a function in Patna on Friday in honor of veteran socialist leader George Fernandes who died on January 29 at the age of 88, announced his decision to set up a life size statue of the former Defense Minister in Muzaffarpur that sent him to the Lok Sabha multiple times between 1977 and 1991.

Speaking at the memorial service at Rabindra Bhawan in the presence of a number of Janata Dal – U leaders including party state President Vashisht Narayan Singh, Shyam Rajak, Lallan Singh, and Ashok Kumar Chowdhary, Kumar, despite his strained relationship with the founding father of the Samata Party in the last few years, said that Muzaffarpur was the ‘home’ of the late leader and it would only be appropriate to set up his life-size statue in the city that he loved so much.

The proposed statue would portray Fernandes in handcuffs to depict his arrest during the Emergency period that led to his incarceration in the historical Muzaffarpur Jail.

The Chief Minister also talked about Fernandes’ initiative in forming the original Samata Party that later morphed into the current JD-U. He also praised his leadership as the Defense Minister that led to the nation’s glorious victory in Kargil war with Pakistan in 1999.
