Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday inaugurated the new building of the Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) and its sprawling campus in Mithapur in Patna along with remotely unveiling 402 new educational buildings in a host of districts.

Kumar said that AKU will be developed as a ‘Center of Excellence’, a term he frequently uses along with ‘super-specialty’ and ‘smart city’ to describe his grand visions.

“Aryabhatta Knowledge University will be developed as a center of excellence in the field of astronomy, geography, and stem cell research. With its modern amenities and a top-notch faculty, it is already attracting students from all parts of the nation,” he said adding research on river system should also be undertaken at the AKU even though the National Institute of Technology (NIT) already has a research facility in that field of education.

The Chief Minister further said that Mithapur, that has been turned into what he calls an ‘educational hub’, will soon have new buildings for the Pataliputra University and also Maulana Mazharul Haq Arabi-Farsi University that will establish Bihar as the leader in education on a number of specialized subjects.

“I had imagined of AKU in 2008. Work began soon on it as we enacted new laws to promote education in the state. In 2010, Prof. S N Guha became the first Vice Chancellor of AKU who, in the lack of a building, began working from his flat. Then it began working from the A N Sinha Institute. Later, it moved its operation in 2012 to Chanakya Law University campus. The groundbreaking of this building was performed on August 13, 2015 and today, I am proud to announce, that this project is complete,” Kumar said.

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Nalanda Open University Vice Chancellor Dr. R K Sinha were among others who also spoke on the occasion.
