Patna: In a clear attempt to damage the reputation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the run up of the Lok Sabha elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Yadav on Thursday claimed Kumar, six months after rejoining the NDA in 2017, wanted to return to the Mahagathbandhan fold but his overtures were rejected by RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Quoting his father who is languishing in a Ranchi jail in connection with the multi-crore rupees fodder scam, the former Deputy of Nitish Kumar said that Lalu Prasad Yadav, in his autobiographic ‘Gopalganj to Raisina: My Political Journey’ has said that merely six months after Kumar betrayed the Mahagathbandhan by going back to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA in 2017, sent his emissary Prashant Kishor to seek return in the Grand Alliance.

“However, my father immediately shot the idea saying never again Nitish Kumar will be a political ally to the RJD because of his shocking betrayal to the Mahagathbandhan,” Tejaswi Yadav said.

Kumar also sent his allies in the Congress party to put pressure on the RJD to take him back in the Mahagathbandhan fold but those offers were also outright rejected by the RJD chief, the younger son of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi said.

Former JD-U president and a friend-turned-foe of Nitish Kumar, Sharad Yadav, who is now in the RJD and is contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a RJD ticket from Madhepura, vouched for the authenticity of Lalu’s claims saying six months after going back to the NDA fold, Kumar made many attempts to return to the Grand Alliance.

Meanwhile, JD-U strategist and party national vice president Prashant Kishor rubbished the entire claim saying this was a desperate attempt by the RJD to malign Nitish Kumar right before the election and if these claims were true, why did he wait this long to reveal it?

“If I go on and reveal what were discussed in my meeting with Lalu Prasad Yadav, it would cause huge embarrassment to him and his family,” Kishor said.

The political strategist, also in a tweet, slammed Tejaswi Yadav saying he was known only for being the son of Lalu Prasad Yadav and he had become the de facto leader of the party simply because his father was in jail. “When you do something all on your own, only then you’ll be recognized for who you are,” Kishore tweeted.
