Patna: Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Begusarai Kanhaiya Kumar has found an unlikely ally in the Janata Dal – U after party leader and MP K C Tyagi on Monday said that he was a much stronger youth leader and an icon than the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) heir-apparent Tejaswi Yadav.

"While the fight in Begusarai is directly between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the RJD candidates, it is true that the presence of CPI candidate Kanhaiya Kumar in the mix has made the race a lot more interesting. If he had been the Mahagathbandhan candidate from Begusarai, it would have been a tough battle for his opponents," the JD-U leader said.

Tyagi further said that it was Lalu Prasad Yadav's obsession with promoting his son as the new leader of the Grand Alliance that kept CPI from being able to be a part of the non-NDA coalition in Bihar.

"Let's face it; Kanhaiya Kumar is a bigger and better leader than Tejaswi Yadav has ever been or ever will be. Kanhaiya is known across the nation and whatever he has achieved is because of his own hard work and ability unlike Tejaswi or Tej Pratap Yadav who had the backing of Lalu Prasad Yadav and the entire RJD machinery. Lalu Prasad Yadav did not want to jeopardize the future of Tejaswi Yadav because the popularity of Kanhaiya Kumar would have eclipsed his own son and that would have been very detrimental to his son's future or the future of the RJD," he said.

The JD-U leader further said that Kanhaiya Kumar became the president of the students' union at 'world-renowned' Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on his own merit and then earned a doctorate degree despite all odds against him.

"These are commendable accomplishments that Tejaswi Yadav, who is politically immature, cannot match. What's interesting is that the CPI that had always been a part of any RJD-led coalition in Bihar was so blatantly ignored by Lalu Prasad Yadav in this election cycle. Obviously, the RJD chief was worried about the political future of his own son who is nowhere close to Kanhaiya Kumar in terms of talent and ability," he said.
