Patna: Police had to use force in Patna on Tuesday after a riot broke out following the recovery of the body of an abducted property dealer who was kidnapped from his home under Gopalpur police station in Patna district on Sunday morning.

Hundreds of people angered by the brutal murder of Awadhesh Thakur blocked the Bypass Road in Patna on Tuesday by putting the body of the victim on the road. They were chanting anti-police slogans saying it failed to recover the kidnap victim due to its lackadaisical approach.

Many policemen were injured as protestors hurled rocks, stones, and other objects at the law enforcement officials.

"Had they acted swiftly after the case of kidnapping was reported to the police, Awadhesh Thakur would still be alive," said victim's brother Shankar Thakur.

As reported, Awadhesh Thakur was returning home after buying some fish from a nearby market when four men in mask in a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire car pulled over and forced him to get in the vehicle. The car then sped away and was last seen heading towards Biharsharif.

On Monday night, someone noticed a dead body in Nalanda district and informed the police. Upon investigation, it turned out to be the body of Thakur.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appeared the victim died of asphyxiation. He also had bruises on the body indicating he was brutally beaten up before being strangled.

Police say they have reasons to believe the kidnapping and murder is related to an ongoing dispute over a piece of property owned by the victim. Family members have filed FIR against two men though the police are yet to apprehend anyone in the case.
