Patna: Though not exactly incident free, the sixth and penultimate phase of the Lok Sabha elections came to an end on Sunday night at eight constituencies in Bihar where voters' turnout was registered at a little less than 60%.

Polls were held at 13,973 booths in East and West Champaran, Sheohar, Valmiki Nagar, Vaishali, Siwan, Gopalganj, and Maharaj with West Champaran recording the highest turnout at 63.90% followed by Valmiki Nagar (63.80%), Vaishali (61.37%), Sheohar (60%), Gopalganj (59.20), East Champaran (58.70%), Siwan (56.75%), and Maharajganj (52.12%).

As reported, an election officer on duty in Sheohar was killed when a rifle of a home-guard jawan accidentally went off hitting the officer in his chest killing him on the spot.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from West Champaran Sanjay Jaiswal escaped injuries and possibly even death when a group of lathi-wielding voters attacked him outside Booth Number 162 in Narkatia forcing the people to open fire in the air to diffuse the tension.

Jaiswal was then escorted by armed jawans to a safe place until the situation was brought under complete control.

Reports of clashes between rival groups were reported from Maharajganj and Siwan where they attacked each other with lathis, bricks, and stones.

Prominent among those whose fates were sealed in the ballot box today include Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) candidate Veena Devi, BJP's Radha Mohan Singh, Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) candidate Akash Kumar Singh, Mohammed Shahabuddin's wife Heena Shahab, Janata Dal – U candidate Kavita Singh, BJP's Janardan Singh Sigriwal and BJP's Rama Devi, among others.

The seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections is scheduled for May 19th when Bihar voters go to poll at eight constituencies namely Patna Saheb, Pataliputra, Nalanda, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram, Karakat, and Jehanabad. Poll results are to be announced on May 23.
