Patna: A Patna court on Saturday granted bail to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi who had accused the Congress leader of sullying the name of all Modis, including himself and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when, during the height of election campaign earlier this year, he had said that 'why is it that all thieves had Modi as their surname'.

Gandhi who was accompanied by Congress leaders Shakti Sinh Gohil and Madan Mohan Jha, arrived at a special court of Kumar Gunjan at about 2:00 pm after which he paid two surety bonds of Rs. 10,000 each to obtain the bail though he denied all charges against him saying they were made-up and baseless.

Later, talking to the media, Gandhi said he continued to remain a soft target of the Sangh Parivar, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his henchmen whose only goal was to harass him and other members of his family.

"Anyone who speaks against the RSS ideology or Narendra Modi immediately comes under the crosshair of his followers. However, I will continue to fight to protect the constitution and for the rights of poor and farmers of the country," the Congress leader said.

The case was filed by Sushil Kumar Modi last April shortly after Gandhi, while campaigning in Karnataka, in reference to fugitive business tycoon Nirav Modi and another fugitive and former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, had said that why it was that all thieves had the last name of Modi.

After posting the bail bonds, Gandhi, accompanied by Gohil and other Congress leaders, visited a popular Dosa place located within Maurya Lok shopping complex where he enjoyed Masala Dosa, Vada, and a hot cup of coffee.

Supporters of the Congress leader were seen gathered by the side of the roads to get a glimpse of him. Some of them were carrying placards to welcome Gandhi to Patna.
