Policeman Dies in the Line of Duty After Being Shot by an Under-trial Prisoner

Patna: Making a complete mockery of the law and order situation in Bihar, a prisoner attempting to make a daring escape from the Danapur Behavioral Court, shot dead a police constable though his bid to freedom was thwarted by other cops present at the court who were able to capture him in less than an hour.

The incident occurred around 4:30 pm on Wednesday.

As reported, notorious vehicle thief Miraj, a.k.a. Rinku, was brought from Beur Jail to the Danapur Court where he was to be presented before a judge. However, as soon as he and three other under-trial prisoners came out of the prison vehicle, about three or four of his associates began firing at the policemen.

One of the criminals managed to pass a pistol to Miraj who was still in handcuffs. He then shot the cop leading him out of the prison vehicle on his head killing him instantly. Another policeman who tried to overpower Miraj was also shot. He was rushed to a hospital where he remains in critical condition.

While Miraj's partners in crime managed to escape on their motorcycles, police were able to apprehend the fleeing prisoner in a matter of minutes.

The dead policeman was identified as 35-year old Prabhakar Raj, a native of West Champaran.

Miraj, who has dozens of cases of vehicle theft against him, now faces murder charge, attempt to murder charge, and attempting to escape from judicial custody besides a host of other charges, DIG (Central) Rajesh Kumar said adding the police will ask the government to pay Rs. 10 lakh to the family of the slain police along with other amenities to his family members.
