Patna: People in Patna erupted in celebration after the Narendra Modi government at the Center on Monday scrapped 65-year old Article 370 and Article 35A in Jammu & Kashmir that gave special status to the state while also splitting the state into two union territories - Jammu & Kashmir and Laddakh – with the former having its own legislature effective immediately.

Students representing various pro-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) outfits took out victory rallies in various parts of the city.

At Kargil Chowk, students used firecrackers and shared sweets while carrying pro-Modi and pro-Amit Shah banners and life-size cutouts.

Chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Modi-Shah Zindabad', students danced to the beat of drums and declared India a 'truly free country' with equal constitutional rights to all.

"This is a historic day for India and is akin to 'surgical strike' on our nation's enemies," said the revelers.

Anticipating trouble, security was heightened across the state as police were directed to increase patrolling in the state capital. Authorities were also monitoring activities on social media and chat groups to identify potential trouble in the state.

Article 370, along with Article 35A, allowed Jammu & Kashmir residents to live under a separate set of laws that included citizenship, ownership of property, and other fundamental rights. Under this provision, Indian citizens from other states were barred from buying land or property in in the state.
