New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj who had undergone a kidney transplant in December of 2016, died just hours after being admitted into Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences on late Tuesday night.

Swaraj, 67, died of cardiac arrest, doctors at the hospital said.

Struggling with her dwindling health, Swaraj did not contest this year's Lok Sabha elections despite maintaining a very high popularity among the party leaders and among the leaders of other parties.

A gifted orator, Swaraj was a nine-time parliamentarian who also served as the Chief Minister of Delhi, and Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Health during the Vajpayee administration.

Among those who were first to arrive at the hospital as the news of Swaraj's death broke out included Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, Dr. Harshvardhan, and Rajnath Singh.

Just hours before her death, Swaraj had made a post on her Twitter account congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for repealing Article 370 and 35A in Jammu & Kashmir.

"A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people," the Prime Minister wrote in one of many tweets.

Condolences were also sent by senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor and leaders of many other parties.
