Patna: With state Assembly elections just a few months away, caste-based politics is once again rearing its ugly head as was evident on Sunday when senior Janata Dal – U leader R C P Singh, speaking at the statewide convention of the Lohar caste at Vidyapati Bhawan in Patna, pledged to get Scheduled Caste status for the Lohar community – a promise made countless times by politicians of all shades and colors.

Inaugurating the convention organized by the Janata Dal – U Adivasi cell, Singh, an MP, rationalized the delay in the change of status of the Lohar caste saying there was a huge confusion between the terms 'Lohar' and 'Lohara' resulting in the delay in governmental proceedings needed to change the status.

"This is a very technical issue as the matter is now in the hand of the Central government. Once this issue is resolved, Lohars would become part of the scheduled caste category," he said.

Singh then appealed to the Lohars to support the JD-U in the coming Assembly polls.

"Lohars have made huge contributions in the past in the development of the state and I hope they will continue to support Nitish Kumar in his dream to make Bihar a developed state," he said.
