Patna: With a history of protest by students that invariably turns violent while Patna University is holding a meeting of its Senate, protestors representing various student unions, clashed with the police on Thursday as the powers that be huddled inside the Wheeler Senate Hall to discuss issues concerning the university.
Among those protesting were unions supported by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), All India Students Federation (AISF), Jan Adhikar Parishad, and a handful of others.
The Senate meeting began at 10:30 am amid massive protest by hundreds of Patna University students who were demanding allocation of hostel rooms to all applicants without further delay, safety of the students, campus placement service, central university status to Patna University, filling of all vacant positions in the university, and 24-hour service at the central library.
The protest was called off only after a delegation of students met with university Proctor Rajnish Kumar who assured them of looking into their grievances promptly.
Meanwhile, during the syndicate meeting, the Senate elected four new members from SC/ST, general, Professor-Reader, and OBC categories.
Patna University Vice Chancellor Ras Bihari Prasad Singh, in his cookie-cutter speech, recounted the accomplishments of the university and also talked about the challenges before it.
"Until we improve our research facilities and act on many innovative ideas, Patna University can not become an institute of national or international repute," he said.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
