Patna: Criminals in the state capital on Wednesday shot and killed a Patna professor in broad daylight on Chandmari Road under Kankarbagh police station.

The victim was identified as 55-year old Shiv Narayan Ram, a political science professor at the TPS College in Patna.

The incident occurred around 10:00 am when the victim was going to the college on foot. Suddenly two criminals on a motorcycle stopped close to Ram and fired several bullets on him.

The criminal escaped before they could be caught or identified. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Though the family members of Ram maintained that he had no known animosity, the police are investigating the case from different angles including an ongoing dispute over a piece of property.

An angry mob in the area then blocked the road for hours burning woods and tires in the middle of the road. The protestors were demanding immediate arrest of the criminals and compensation for the family of the professor.

The police had to use light force to disperse the crowd though no one was said to be hurt in the incident.

Authorities are combing surveillance footage from the area to identify and catch the killers. SSP Upendra Kumar Sharma said that given the number of security cameras in the area, there was a good likelihood the killers were captured in one or more of them.

Ram, a native of Rohtas district, leaves behind his wife Anita Devi, 11-year old son Ankit, two younger brothers and other family members.
