Patna: Just days after he was sworn-in as the new Education Minister of Bihar, Janata Dal – U leader Mewalal Choudhary resigned from his post in the wake of mounting pressure from the opposition parties who dredged up criminal accusations leveled against him during his term as the Vice Chancellor of Bhagalpur Agriculture University.
As reported, a criminal case was filed against Choudhary, a legislator from Tarapur, back in 2017 for his alleged role in massive irregularities in the appointments of assistant professors and junior scientists when he served as the Vice Chancellor of Bhagalpur Agriculture University.
A case of corruption was filed against Choudhary after the then Governor of Bihar, now the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, gave the go-ahead signal to do so. However, the Nitish administration never allowed filing of a charge-sheet as required by the law for any criminal case to proceed.
At the time, Nitish-led Janata Dal – U was part of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan that wasted no time in suspending Choudhary amidst growing demand for his resignation by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His membership into the JD-U, however, was restored only a few months later.

Earlier, opposition leader Tejaswi Yadav slammed the new Nitish administration saying by appointing leaders like Choudhary, the Chief Minister had signaled a reign of loot and robbery. He also railed against the new cabinet saying not one minister was from any minority community.
"The real culprit is you. Why did you make him a minister? Your double standard and gimmicks will not be allowed to run any longer", tweeted Tejaswi Yadav.
