Cultural Icon Hari Uppal Dies in Kolkata

Patna: Noted classical dancer and Padmashree recipient Hari Uppal, just a month after he performed at a function in Patna, died at a hospital in Kolkata on Sunday night at the age of 84, a family spokesperson said.

Uppal, also a Sangeet Academy Award winner and a native of Samastipur district, was rushed to Kolkata nearly two weeks ago after developing complications in his brain. He died of brain hemorrhage on Sunday night, Uppal's son Abhik Uppal said.

The acclaimed dancer, who is the founder of Patna's iconic Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir, is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son.

Uppal's body is expected to arrive in Patna by a plane on Monday following which his last rite will be completed.
