Purnia: Police in Purnia on Friday arrested the notorious husband of Janata Dal – U MLA Bima Bharati after the legislator filed a complaint with the police that her estranged husband Awadhesh Mandal had tried to poison her son in an attempt to 'teach her a lesson'.
Bharati, who contested from Rupauli constituency after leaving Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in favor of JD-U in the last Assembly elections, in her police complaint, said that Mandal had made several attempts to poison her son but had been unsuccessful so far. Fearing the safety of her son, the JD-U leader asked for a restraining order against her husband and immediate arrest of the man who has a long criminal background.
A police team acting on Bharati's FIR, picked up Mandal from his home Tikapatti and sent him to Purnia jail, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shivdeep Lande said.
Mandal was previously arrested on June 1 after he brutally beat up a government employee in the revenue department. He was later released on bail.
In December 2010 following a domestic argument, Mandal beat up Bharati so severely that she landed in a hospital for physical injuries.
This past September, Bima Bharati, who has been married to Mandal since 1996, filed a petition for divorce citing irreconcilable differences between the two.
