Patna: District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agrawal on Wednesday held a meeting with the representatives of senior citizens of Patna to get a better understanding of their plight and asked officials to come up with ideas that offered protection to the elderly in terms of their expenses, health care, and social activities.

Holding the meeting at Patna Collectorate's Seminar Hall, Agrawal asked the officials to ensure the senior citizens were being paid a minimum of Rs. 10,000 per month by their children and those who default on this payment, would owe them that amount along with interest accrued on them.

It is not clear under what law Agrawal issued his directives.

"The life and health of our elderly people is our responsibility and money should not come in way when it comes to protect them and provide them a decent lifestyle," he said.

Agrawal also directed the officials to ensure the retired men and women were given their pension without any delay or red tape.

"We will have this kind of meeting with our senior citizens every three months so we can continue to evaluate progress made in their lives. I have also asked the local police station in-charges and SDOs to pay careful attention to the complaints of the elderly people and resolve their issues without any delay or bureaucratic roadblock," the DM said.
