Patna: Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader and a minister in the Narendra Modi government, at a press conference in Patna on Sunday, said that no one at the Center or anywhere else was going to touch the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) Act as it would only spell disaster for the party that tries to abolish it.

Paswan, who was in Patna to give final touch to the preparation for the party's upcoming event to honor B R Ambedkar who is widely considered as the father of the modern Indian Constitution, said that there should not be and there won't be any amendment in the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 as any attempt to get rid of it would lead to nothing but chaos and anarchy.

"Rights given to the Dalits will remain unchanged. No force can change it as it would lead to their harassment which would then lead to social disorder and confusion," he said.

Referring to the last week nationwide bandh in support of SC/ST Act, the LJP leader said that while he sympathized with the protestors' concerns, he was concerned by the opposition parties' attempt to politicize it leading to violent protests in a number of states that left many injured.

The Union Minister who, like Jitan Ram Manjhi, the former Chief Minister of Bihar and leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), is known for his caste-based politics, later met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his residence where he sought his support in his demand for the inclusion of the Paswan caste in the Mahadalit category.

Paswan also formally invited the Chief Minister to be a part of the celebration of the birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar on April 14 in Patna.
