Patna: Ram Vilas Paswan, Central Minister and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief, at a press conference in Patna on Monday, lashed out at Congress national president Rahul Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati saying the two were shedding phony tears on the issue of Dalits and reservations and their words did not mean anything.

"It was during the Congress government at the Center when reservation in promotion was ended. Mayawati, who projects herself as the messiah of the Dalits, did not say anything against it then and instead, issued a memo saying Scheduled Caste Act was widely being abused by many people in many states. She also ordered arrest of those who were found to be abusing the Act following an investigation by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)," the LJP leader said.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Paswan said that the NDA government at the Center only strengthened the SC/ST Act instead of trying to end it as is being accused by the leaders of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), BSP, and some other parties.

The Union Minister, who is well-known for his own politics based on caste, further said that the Modi government has formed a committee to seek truth in what did the Additional Solicitor General say regarding the SC/ST Act in the court.

"There was nothing wrong with the government memo on amendments in SC/ST Act but if the Additional Solicitor General somehow said something inadvertently in the court that was not part of the original memo then we need to get to the bottom of it. Therefore, the government has formed a committee to investigate the matter," he said.

Demanding a clarity on Congress' stand on reservation in promotion, private companies, and judiciary, Paswan said that the Congress was speaking from the both sides of its mouth and must come clean on these issues that could affect the SC/ST Act as it stands currently.

Turning his attention towards the RJD, the LJP chief said that if Lalu Prasad Yadav was so concerned about welfare of Dalits in Bihar then he should announce the name of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi as the chief ministerial candidate in the next state elections.

"Nitish Kumar had the guts to make Manjhi, a Mahadalit, the Chief Minister of Bihar. Let's see if the RJD can do the same," he said.

As reported, the RJD has already named Lalu's son Tejaswi Yadav as the next Chief Ministerial candidate of the Mahagathbandhan comprising RJD, HAM, and Congress.
