Patna: The daughter of legendary Bollywood actors Sunil and Nargis Dutt, Priya Dutt, who is a trustee of the Mumbai-based Nargis Dutt Foundation, was in Patna on Saturday to join hand with Grameen Sneh Foundation, an NGO in Bihar, to spread awareness about cancer and how to deal with it.

The former Congress MP and sister of another Bollywood stalwart Sanjay Dutt, Priya Dutt, at a press conference at Bihar Industries Association (BIA) office in Patna, said that her foundation, working together with Grameen Sneh Foundation, will concentrate on spreading awareness about the deadly disease and will hold statewide camps to carry out preliminary medical tests to detect various forms of cancer, including oral, breast, and cervical, in their early stage to provide proper treatment to the patients before they become untreatable.

"Cancer can be treated if they are detected during its early formation. We will be holding camps throughout Bihar to conduct tests in rural areas so we can defeat cancer before it defeats us," Ms. Dutt said.

Talking about the tragic death of her own mother, the star of '50s and '50s with films like Mother India, Aag, Barsaat, Shree 420, Jagte Raho, and Chori Chori, among many others, Ms. Dutt said that her mother's life was prematurely taken away by cancer in 1981 and while being in the hospital, she wondered how poor people suffering from cancer could afford to get treatment that was beyond the reach of even rich people like herself.

"That's when she told my father to launch a foundation that would provide help to poor battle cancer," she said.

Grameen Sneh Foundation’s Secretary and IAS officer Ganga Kumar, Janata Dal – U legislator Devesh Chandra Thakur, and Congress legislator Shakeel Ahmed Khan were also present at the press conference.
