Patna: With caste-based politics once again rearing its ugly head in Bihar elections as witnessed by caste leaders seeking more and more seats for their fellow caste members for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Friday gave a grand welcome to Dr. Bhagwan Lal Sahni, the newly-appointed chairperson of the National Backward Caste Commission (NBCC).

With Mukesh Sahni, the self-described leader of the Nishad/Sahni/Fishermen community and the president of the newly-formed Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) now in the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Grand Alliance camp, both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal – U, the two key constituents of the NDA, have been busy attracting other Nishad leaders in the fold to counter any effect of Mukesh Sahni joining hands with the Mahagathbandhan.

Calling him the biggest Nishad leader in the country, Modi, at a function at S K Memorial Hall in Patna on Friday said that Bhagwan Sahni’s contributions towards empowering backward class was such that the government made him the chairperson of the NBCC.

“While some opposition leaders are hell-bent on dividing the Nishad community for political gains, BJP has dedicated itself to take care of their social interests. The fishermen have traditionally been the supporters of the BJP and they will continue to remain so despite the opposition’s attempt to divide them.

“It was the BJP that sent Captain Jaya Narayan Nishad to the Rajya Sabha. His son Ajay Nishad is also a parliamentarian while Brij Kishore Bind is a state minister. Arjun Sahni is a legislative council legislator and Neelam Sahni is the member of the Women’s Commission. No one has given the Nishad family the respect that the BJP has given them and it will continue to accord them the same respect and place in the party that they have always deserved,” Modi said.

The Deputy Chief Minister then went on explaining a laundry list of things that the NDA government has done for the welfare of the fishermen community including its decision to create a full-fledged Fishery cabinet; loan at a low interest of four percent, wholesale and retail fish markets in all blocks, housing for fishermen, and help in constructing new ponds for pisciculture.
