New Delhi: Nearly ten days after her husband and former film star Shatrughan Sinha ditched the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined Congress so he could contest Lok Sabha elections from his old seat of Patna Saheb, Poonam Sinha, for the first time in her life, jumped into the political foray by joining Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday.

Poonam Sinha, also an ex-Bollywood star with limited success, joined the party at a function in Lucknow in the presence of Dimple Yadav, wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Samajwadi Party (SP) made the announcement on its official Twitter page saying Poonam Sinha has joined the party in the presence of SP leader Dimple Yadav in Lucknow.

Media reports have suggested in the past that Poonam Sinha could contest Lok Sabha polls from Lucknow where she would go against senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh.

With Shatrughan Sinha himself now a likely Congress candidate from the much-hyped Patna Saheb seat where he would be going head to head with his former colleague and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, his wife's entry into politics and possibly contesting from Lucknow is seen by some as an 'insurance policy' for the former BJP leader to keep enjoying the perks that come with being a member of the Parliament particularly in view of the uncertainty of his own success at a seat that is highly divided on caste basis and is garnering national interest.

People will go to polls in Lucknow on May 6 where nominations close on in two days for Lucknow, where voting will take place on May 6.
