Patna: While the Bihar police department was busy patting each other in back during an award function in Patna on Sunday, criminals in broad daylight shot and killed former Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) Ward Counselor Nageshwar Rai outside his home under Patrakar Nagar police station.
As reported, two men on a motorcycle arrived at the home of Rai in Chitragupta Nagar near Sanjeevani Hospital at around 10:10 am and shot the former Ward Counselor in his head killing him on the spot. The criminals then sped away in their vehicle though not before their image was captured in nearby security video cameras.
Rai was 72.
The incident sparked a protest in the area as hundreds of people jammed the New By-Pass Road by burning tires and other items demanding immediate arrest of the criminals and adequate compensation to the victim's family.
The body of the victim was later sent to a hospital for an autopsy.
Jitendra Kumar, Superintendent of Police (East), said on the face it appeared to be a case of personal enmity but the police would be investigating the case from all angles.
"We have footage of the criminals arriving and escaping from the crime scene. These surveillance videos should assist us in identifying the killers soon," Kumar said.
