Patna: Tension was running high in Patna on Sunday when police first resorted to lathi charge to deal with Congress protestors during its Jan Vedna March near Hartali Road. Around the same time in another part of the town, another group of law enforcement official was raining batons on the followers of Pappu Yadav, the Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) leader, who have been protesting against the state government with their own set of grievances and demands.
As expected, a clash ensued and the police began chasing the protestors away by swinging batons at them. Undeterred by some minor injuries, Pappu Yadav and his band of Merry Men broke the police cordon moving west towards the Dak Bungalow Crossing.
With traffic coming at a complete halt, the police first used water cannon to disperse the crowd but when even that did not work, they lobbed tear gas to bring the situation under control.
More than a dozen people were said to be injured in the clash.
At least two policemen were also injured when they were hit by stones thrown at them by Yadav's supporters.
Later in the afternoon, a delegation of JAP leaders met with Governor Fagu Chauhan and handed over a memo of their 15-point demands to him that included sacking of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi for failing to protect Patna from flooding a few months ago and financial accountability for projects like Smart City, Namami Gange, and underground drainage construction that the government had been promising for years.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
