Patna: What was supposed to be a civil debate between rival presidential candidates for Patna University Students' Union turned out to be a free-for-all brawl between the supporters of different candidates leading the police to use force to bring the situation under control.

The ugly incident took place on Thursday at the Patna College playground that was the venue of debate between candidates backed by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal-U, and a host of other student organizations.

With the cause of the sudden flare up yet to be determined, as soon as the RJD-backed candidate Ayush Kumar began speaking, rival gang members from nearby Jackson Hostel began thrashing those in the audience with hockey sticks and other makeshift weapons. Soon plastic chairs began flying as college officials rushed to call the police before things really got out of hand.

At least a dozen students were hurt in the fracas. Police arrested two men in the case and more arrests could be coming by tomorrow, officials said.

Eyewitnesses said someone spread the rumor that bombs had been planted at the debate venue though that turned out to be a hoax.

Police have filed FIRs against a number of students.

Earlier on Wednesday, a similar clash between RJD and JD-U backed candidates took place at the gate of Patna Women's College leaving two students injured.
